[TheUWfarm] The Garden screening tonight!

This is just a reminder that "The Garden" is being screened tonight! For those of you who haven't seen it, it's definitely worth your time. Details below: 

Social Justice Film Series: The Garden

The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country's most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community. But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers: Why was the land sold to a wealthy developer for millions less than fair-market value? Why was the transaction done in a closed-door session of the LA City Council? Why has it never been made public?

There will also be a training about "Campaigning in the Digital Age" put on by the same organization on September 17th. In this training, we will analyze and discuss the what and how of campaign strategy in the age of digital organizing. The seminar will look at a number of campaigns combining online and offline organizing to effect change, with a special focus including Presente.org's Basta Dobbs campaign (www.bastadobbs.com), the successful effort to remove Lou Dobbs from CNN. We will look at & discuss how the campaign fused traditional, offline organizing methods with online and other new media organizing methods, how we became media to defeat Media. After studying examples of successful strategy development, we will
take a hands-on, practical session that applies principles and practices learned to a specific campaign.

This day-long training is $50 and has very limited space available. Please contact danisha@nwfco.org for more information.

[TheUWfarm] Dawg Daze Call for Volunteers

Hello Everyone,

on September 27th the U.W. Farm will be hosting a Dawg Daze event for incoming freshman. We encourage you all to stop by and welcome the new farmers. We already have 131 guests attending on facebook, not including the 100-200 freshman that are expected to come! We need help! Volunteer jobs include making a lot of dough on sunday September 26th and setting up tables, tents, and music equipment on the 27th...Im sure many more jobs will come up... Please let me know if you are interested in helping out.

[TheUWfarm] Dirty Dozen volunteer position

Hello,

My name is Jacob King and I am enrolled in ANTH 488 (Agroecology) for the fall quarter. I would be very interested in taking a volunteer position on the farm. However, I do not have a lot of experience with farming practices of my own. I only have exposure through the farm I grew up on as a child in which I was partially involved. I also have been exposed to various gardens of friends and family throughout my life. I will be very eager to learn new techniques and will be someone whom can be depended upon. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

[TheUWfarm] Dirty Dozen Volunteers:

Hello Farmers:

We are looking to fill our dirty dozen crew this coming fall.   Dirty Dozen volunteers are the core group of UW farm workers - they literally 'make the farm run.' Each dirty dozen volunteer must commit to attending Friday morning meetings at 7:30 (all quarter long) in addition to volunteering for two hours of work each week. The Dirty Dozen orientation will be Saturday, October 2nd from 9 - noon. Becoming a dirty dozen volunteer is a great way to get involved in the farm. If you are interested please e-mail me soon!

Also, We have one remaining intern opening. If you are interested in becoming a farm intern - it isn't too late. Farm internships are 3 credits of biology 399. It requires ~10hours/week of time spent at the farm along with additional reading time and a weekly meeting. It is a great way to deepen your understanding of sustainable agriculture its practice in the Urban Environment. Please send a me a letter explaining your interest in the internship and then we can set up a time to meet!
