Following the film, UW PhD candidate in anthropology and CHID instructor David Giles will lead a discussion about the political and cultural aspects of hunger and waste in Seattle. Giles is teaching a course titled "The Vagaries of Home: Vagrancy, Value and the Abject" which encourages students to examine the unknown and unnoticed cultural, political and ecological histories of the city, "from the desks of city planners and politicians to the alleys and interstices written in between the lines of their decisions and the homeless who sleep there.

[TheUWfarm] Reminder! Want to be a UW Farm Leader next year?

Hey farmers!

This is just a reminder that we are in the midst of choosing and transitioning to new leadership. Be a part of the process!

You can read more about the positions, or take a look at our election timeline and description (remember to vote at the farm between Wednesday and Friday next week!).

Coming up! If you are interested in being a farm coordinator we need to hear from you. This is a new process, because these two positions will now be paid thanks to our CSF funding! So we're trying on some new formalities. Please email Paige Irwin, irwinp@uw.edu with your name, the position(s) you are interested in and a blurb, a brief description, of your interests and experience by THE END OF TODAY! It will be good to think and write about why you are interested and what you think you will bring to your position.

Also, if you are interested in a leadership position besides being one of the Farm Coordinators, please also submit your name and the potential position to Paige by the same deadline.

Check out the rest of our process online! And come join the fun!

Re: [TheUWfarm] Baking Day: Things to Bring!

I have one cast iron skillet (8 or 10 inch diameter) that I will bring. Have we completely ruled out glass bakeware? I would completely understand why, just wondering.

Ahoy Farmers, Bakers and Poets!

As many of you are well aware, folks from the UWFarm and the UW Student Food Co-op are putting together a Baking and Poetry Day at the UW Farm on Saturday May 14th.  This is a potluck event of the non-traditional sort.  Please bring uncooked items that you wish to throw into the cob oven and share with the whole gang.  This is the perfect opportunity to experiment with cooking/baking with real, honest-to-goodness fire!

Our breakfast and lunch menu so far includes: breakfast pizzas, frittatas, breakfast pastries, cardoon stew, hearth breads and flat breads, and roasted vegetables.

Suggestions of things you can bring:
-pizza dough (see below for recipes)
-breakfast pizza toppings: fruit, nuts, honey, peanut butter, jam, cheese
-fritatta ingredients: any vegetables laying around in your fridge, be it zucchini, onions, spinach, etc. and a few eggs, if you got 'em
-root vegetables for roasting
-unbaked bread dough
-unbaked dough for scones, cinnamon rolls, brioche, etc. (see below for recipes)

Non-edibles to bring:
-metal cookware for your baked goods
-cast iron cookware (let me know if you do have cast iron--we need it!)
-friends

We will be starting the fire at 7am and mixing doughs/preparing ingredients until 10am when we'll start throwing stuff in the oven.  We can arrange for you to drop ingredients off at the farm the day/evening before the event if that would be more convenient for you.  Please let me know if and what you plan on bringing or feel free to contact me if you have questions or need help with a particular baking idea. This is sure to be an outrageously excellent event!

Never made pizza dough or scones before? Neither of these items require an electric mixer, so even the kitchen-less college student can make them.  Here are a few recipes:

[TheUWfarm] Foraging Class Monday: 8:30 am, also Etymology

Hello Folks,
This monday (May 9) from 8:30 am-9:20am we will be getting up close and personal with two of the UW Farm's edible unsown plants- Honesty Plant (Lunaria annua) and Hops (Humulus lupulus) as well as nibbling on several other niceties that are currently popping.  Bring your curiousity, and a bag to bring some food home if you want.  No experience necessary, and we will start from the Botany Greenhouse.  And for those who are interested, after that (and some during that) time I will be exploring the rich etymological history of the plants growing on and around the farm.  Hope to see you down there!
Thanks,
Brady Ryan
