The Tukwila Community Garden is breaking ground and would love help with building some raised beds with Foster High School students. No previous farming experience needed. Bucket Brigades for Grow Food in the Center of the City Kick-off Event Sunday, May 1st, 11:00 am – 3:30 pm at Victor Steinbreuck Park Come celebrate urban gardening and kick-off the free classes offered by Seattle Tilth and Seattle Parks and Recreation. Seattle Tilth's Edible Plant Sale Saturday, May 7th and Sunday, 8th in Wallingford, and Saturday, May 14th in Issaquah Come to this festive annual gardener gathering and choose from the largest selection of locally grown organic vegetable plants in the Puget Sound region. Both "warm season" crops like tomatoes, peppers, squash and corn and "cool season" favorites like lettuces, peas and spinach are waiting for you. Volunteers are needed to prep plants, set-up, educate customers about plant varieties, check-out, cashier, tear-down and much more. Tickets are $25 (includes one subscription), $15 for subscribers Go to www.brownpapertickets.com or call 800/838-3006 See for more information Film: The Economics of Happiness Thursday, April 28th, 5:30 pm Savery Hall 260 The student organization, College Greens UW, is holding its 2nd annual film/speaker series dedicated to issues of environmental and social justice. The first film, entitled 'The Economics of Happiness', concerns localization and sustainability movements, climate change and building community resiliency. Following the screening, recent UW-grad and environmental activist Joanna Wright will discuss a local movement called Transition Seattle. Joanna has led several urban farming and education projects in Seattle and spent two summers interning with local farms. Recently involved in Seattle's Transition Town network, she has been deeply inspired by the way the Transition model integrates positive community visioning with issues of ecological, economic, and social sustainability. The next two films in the series are: Dive! A film that follows self-proclaimed 'dumpster-divers' to analyze food waste and food access/justice issues.
