[TheUWfarm] FYI: UW General Assembly

Dear UW Farm,

In the same spirit of horizontal learning and communication that is practiced so beautifully on the farm, we're trying to organize a place for democratic participation and discussion on a campus-wide level- through the first ever UW General Assembly. We hope this will grow into a space for our campus community to unite to bring positive change to the University, and practice collective decision-making and action. The farm has so much positive energy and ground-breaking (no pun intended) ideas that we would love to see contributed to building this space on campus. Please join us! Details are below.

Students, faculty, and staff of the UW,

You are hereby invited to the first official

UW General Assembly
Tuesday, January 10th - 5pm
Kane Hall Lobby

UW needs an alternative voice. A place for students, faculty, and staff active on campus to connect with each other, engage in democratic discussion, and practice collective decision-making and action. We need a space to talk about what we want for our campus, outside bureaucratic channels.
Think about the campus you want to see, or have been trying to create.
Then come to the General Assembly. We will share ideas, learn from our community, find ways to support common goals, and discuss how we want to build a more democratic and participatory University. Join us!

[TheUWfarm] Join Winter Volunteer Crew!

Hello everyone! Every quarter, we have a crew of a dozen or so people (sometimes a lot more!) commit to being a part of the Dirty Dozen at the farm! This is the core group of volunteers that meets every week to make the to-do list and check in with the going-on's at the farm!

It is so important to have a lot of newcomers as well as old, so if you've been on the crew before, we need you! And if you've never been down to the farm but want to get involved, we need you too! We're going to meet on Fridays at 11:30-12:30 and then have a work party for anyone and everyone after the meeting until 2:30. So, if you can commit 11:30-12:30 every friday, as well as another two hour chunk anytime during the week, please, sign on up!!

Here is a link to a survey if you are interested in joining (just so I can have everyone's names/ info compiled somewhere)

ps.
winter tasks on the farm include (of course not limited too!)
-completing the planting plan for next season (including seed order!)
-compost making, turning, upkeep (including worm bins!)
-compost-tea making!
-sign making (for all you artistic folk)
-FIELD TRIP?!?!
-etc. etc.

Can't wait for winter shenanigans on the farm with ya'll!!

[TheUWfarm] CHICKENS NEED YOU!

Hey everyone,

Just another reminder that we could REALLY use your help over winter break with the chickens!  It's a five minute job in the morning or evening so if you'll be around it would mean a lot to the ladies!

If you haven't been trained to work with the chickens, no problem! There is a training tomorrow morning at 11 am or email me and we can set up another one that works for you. The training only takes 5 minutes!!!

Please please think about helping out and fill out this poll if you can!! http://www.doodle.com/2wzpr3z2nn8c4hu6

Have some wonderful holidays!!

[TheUWfarm] UW Farm Blogging!

Hey everybody!

I've been really disconnected from the farm this quarter with school and work - but I am ready to get back into blogging for the UW Farm! I am always looking for new people who are interested in writing posts, may it be weekly, monthly, or just a one time deal! Since I haven't been around, if anyone has any comments or would be willing to write a short blurb or paragraph(s) about how the fall has been, that would be simply wonderful. If any new members, or those in the dirty dozen would like to contribute (photos work too!) that would be great and would keep everyone updated on the farm!

Please send me any photos or thoughts on the farm - to help the UW Farm blog grow! And if interested in helping, please feel free to email me!

Best,
Kelly Chandler

Dear Friends of the UW Farm,

We need your support! The Farm has grown and continues to grow both in acreage and student involvement. With this growth the need for a paid Program Coordinator has become readily apparent. In order to continue to inspire a new generation of farmers and eaters the UW Farm needs a consistent faculty member to support current student leadership and volunteering. We are beginning a campaign to help create this position. There are two ways you can help. The first – donate now to support the farm. The second – sign this petition outlining our need for this position. With your signature this petition will be sent to UW administration requesting funding for this position. Please review petition below.

Beth,

Do you know anyone that has Chinese and/or Filipino speaking/writing skills that have an interest in community gardens/urban farming?  The City of Seattle is looking for folks on a contract basis to assist with their P-Patch Community Garden program...  If you know of anyone (either current UW farm folks or alumni), please forward along...

Thanks,

Stanley

Hi Stan,

You are correct in your speculation. For the contract work, I am seeking both Chinese dialects. If a candidate could do both that is even better but not required.  As for the Filipino community Tagalog would be the preference.

Connie is really great person and excellent resource .

Thank you for passing the information on.

Hi Phi,

My name is Stanley Choi and I'm an academic adviser with the UW Program on the Environment.  I'm also one of Connie So's former students.  She forwarded me a contract position with the P-Patch Community Garden.  I was wondering which Chinese dialects you were seeking (Cantonese?  Mandarin?  Both?)  Also, for the Filipino community, I'm assuming you are looking for someone with Tagalog speaking capabilities (or another dialect?)  I work with many students/alumni that have interests in community gardens/farms and food systems.  There may be a few folks with these speaking/written capabilities too.  I would be happy to forward this on to our students if you feel it is appropriate.

Best,

Stanley

Hi Connie,

It has been awhile since I've seen you. Just for reference, I am Kieu Anh's and Chong's friend.

Because of your strong connection with the API and Chinese community, I was wondering if you know of anybody who is a member of the Chinese Community that would be interested in part-time project based outreach contract work for the P-Patch Community Garden Program. The person's Chinese must be strong both verbally and written due to interpretation and translation work. The total work hours is between 40 – 50hrs, over a 12 month period. It is great for somebody who is currently part-time  or looking for work. In addition, I am looking for folks to do outreach in the Filipino community too, similar criteria.  The attachment has more details on the contract work and compensation.

I am looking to immediately contract out outreach services for the Othello neighborhood. And in January, I will looking for a contractor for the White Center neighborhood. Please feel free to pass the information on.

Thanks,

[TheUWfarm] Fwd: Mon 12/12: Food Justice Activists Join Port Shutdown

Occupy Seattle calls on Food Justice activists to join WEST COAST PORT SHUTDOWN

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12
In response to recent attacks on workers and occupations across the country

WHY this is a Food Justice issue: The West Coast Port Shutdown on Monday, December 12th, is a cross-movement action to challenge powerful corporations by shutting down the ports they control. Called by the Occupy movement, it includes many segments of organized and unorganized labor.  Among the targets in Monday's port shutdown is Bunge, which along with Cargill and ADM is one of the world's three largest grain traders. Together they control 90% of the market. This extreme consolidation of grain markets allows the three companies to reap immense profits from food shortages and the rising price of grain. These same companies have helped to produce those shortages with their investment in diverting food to biofuel--which creates higher profits for them (Oxfam 2011, GROW). Bunge work, in particular, is in Brazilian biofuels and has been connected to Amazonian deforestation.

Monday's strike will play into an ongoing struggle waged by the Port of Longview's longshore workers against Bunge, which has undermined their union by refusing to hire union workers at their new grain terminal in Washington. This is the fight of anyone who is interested in battling corporate control - over food, over workers, over the economy. If you are interested in Food Justice, you have a stake in this shutdown of the ports.

Actions are already planned in San Diego, LA, Tacoma, Portland, and Oakland. No union-busting! Solidarity with immigrant port truckers battling Goldman Sachs in LA!  We support the Longview, WA, Longshoremen in their struggle against multinational grain exporter EGT. Against police repression and evictions of occupations. Occupy everything! Against austerity! They say cut back, we say fight back.  TOGETHER WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE.

WHERE: Meet at Westlake Plaza (4th & Pine) at 1pm and march to blockade the Port of Seattle. There will be two rallies: one near the port at 3 PM and one at 6 PM at the Spokane Street fishing area, just to the east of the Spokane St. Bridge, near the intersection of SW Spokane St & SW Manning St, under the West Seattle bridge.  Come to the Spokane St. fishing area anytime after 6pm!

HOW TO GET THERE: Bus routes to Spokane Street fishing area:  125 bus goes there from downtown and from West Seattle; get off at Chelan Ave SW and SW Spokane St. and walk east along the Alki bike path.  ***We are currently looking into chartering buses so people can ride them to get to the port. If you or anyone you know has affordable bus services that this movement could use, please email at seattleportsolidarity@gmail.com

DONATE: Funds needed make this action possible - banners, flyers and hiring buses.  Please email seattleportsolidarity@gmail.com if you can donate.

FOR MORE INFORMATION: National action website here and read Occupy Seattle Statement here.  #occupytheport, #occupyseattle, Call (206) 424-4547.

There is a pile of postcards in the Farm Cabinet (in the Botany Greenhouse) with a message asking Senator Patty Murray to support a Farm Bill that works to sustain small farms, healthy communities, and a clean environment. Fill out your name and address, then leave the postcard in the box, and it will be hand-delivered at the rally and meeting below.

2. Come to a rally. This Tuesday, November 22nd, the Northwest Farm Bill Action Group will hold a rally and meeting with Senator Patty Murray's King County Director to ask for a Farm Bill that works for small farms, healthy communities, and a clean environment.

When:
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2:00 PM

Where:
Pike Place Market, Seattle
Rally at Victor Steinbrueck Park
2001 Western Avenue
(Grassy knoll at the north end of Pike Place Market near Virginia St.)

How:
A small group will discuss our policy priorities with Senator Murray's King County Director while strolling together through Pike Place Market. At the same time, a rally will be taking place at the north end of the market withe the same goals in mind. The small group will join the rally, where all will present the County Director with hundreds of signed postcards from farmer and urban constituents as well as a poster with messages from Washington farmers.

It will bring together young, environmental leaders from North America, Russia, Mongolia, and other parts of the world to study environmental science, policy, and management at these two superlative lakes.

The SEE program has helped to produce hundreds of young environmental leaders around the world.  Our alumni are now working in diverse fields including transportation planning in Lake Tahoe, sustainable farming programs in rural villages of Cameroon and maintaining the health of the Selenga River Watershed in Mongolia, to name a few. Some of your students could be the next generation of these influential environmentalists.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could pass on the information about our unique interdisciplinary program to your students.  Whether they study the hard sciences, environmental studies, conservation, Russian, international studies, engineering or any other field, they will be an asset to the program and through that, to the management and preservation of Lake Tahoe and Lake Baikal. As an alumna of this program, I can say that I learned more than I can put into words during my participation, and it was the turning point in my future professional career.

The application deadline is February 7th, but any applications received before December 5th will be evaluated before the holidays.  Spaces are limited so students are encouraged to apply early.

Please spread the word about the Summer Environmental Exchange to students at your institution—forward this e-mail to your
list-servs, put up copies of the recruitment poster or talk to particular students you think might be a great fit.

Thank you so much for your time, consideration and assistance in letting your students know about this great opportunity.

Sincerely,

Small-group research projects at Tahoe and Baikal offer participants the experience of working with agencies, organizations, and academic institutions on ongoing environmental initiatives at both lakes. Projects address at least one of the three major themes of TBI's work: watershed management, sustainable development, and cultural exchange.

The Summer Environmental Exchange is unique because there will be participants from all of the countries on the trip, and other countries around the world.  The group will explore Lake Tahoe, Mongolia and Russia, all while learning from each other personally and professionally.  In addition to being immersed in different cultures, past groups have had the opportunity to participate in activities like hiking, kayaking, and whitewater rafting.  Check out the blog from last year for a detailed description of all the program's activities.

[TheUWfarm] Sustainable Agriculture & Conservation - Shaw Island - B Quarter

Hello UW Farmers,

We are pondering the best way to move forward with the Sustainable Agriculture and Conservation course on Shaw Island this summer.

Last summer we piloted this course at UW's Cedar Rock Preserve on Shaw Island.   Students in this course learned about sustainable agriculture and forest ecology.   It was a terrific experience for all of us.   We are thinking about running the course again this summer and we'd really benefit from your input.

Please take a moment to fill out this survey  and let us know what you think!

I really appreciate your time.  Thanks again for all you do!

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Wheat, Ph.D.

[TheUWfarm] Food Sovereignty, trade justice and the roots of migration

Hello All,

We had a terrific farm lunch today with Eleazar.  For those of you who couldn't make it today or would like to learn more he will also be speaking this Thursday evening!  Here are the details.

Witness for Peace Northwest & CAGJ present:
Food Sovereignty and the Roots of Migration: Defending Corn and Culture in Oaxaca

Thurs Nov 17th,  7 – 9pm
Location: New Hope Baptist Church, 116 21st Avenue in Central District.
Light refreshments will be served.

Featured speaker: Eleazar Garcia, Sustainable Agriculture Expert from CEDICAM - Center for Integral Small Farmer Development of the Mixteca, Awarded with the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2008

And hear a Report-Back from CAGJ & Seattle delegates recently returned from Oaxaca!

Eleazar Garcia will address the devastating impacts the North American Free Trade Agreement has had on the Mexican countryside, including an abandonment of traditional sustainable ways of life of small farmers, as well as a boom in rural Mexican migration to the United States. Speaking from his experience of seeing this devastation first hand, Eleazar will present a hopeful alternative that is being carried out to preserve the land, and to stem the tide of migrants leaving rural Mexico for the U.S.

Co-Sponsored by Witness for Peace Northwest & Community Alliance for Global Justice

[TheUWfarm] Wanna be a farm tour leader? Learn about Farm Education!

HEY FARMERS!!!

Do you want to learn more about what it means to be an Urban Farmer? do you want to share your stories and talk about the future of agriculture? The farmeducation team needs YOU! Every week at the farm we give tours to all kinds of different groups, UW classes, high school groups, even preschoolers, and we need creative people to talk about every thing from farmer art to cover cropping. I would like to set up a skill share for farm tours - a tour of tours - so even the greenest farmer will feel confident becoming a tour leader.

Please, if you are interested, sign up for the farmeducation listserve here, and fill out the doodle poll for the tour of tours here. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me at rahnibennett@gmail.com.

Peace, love and veggies!

[TheUWfarm] FARM INTERNSHIP

Hello UW Farm,

It is that time of the quarter again when everyone turns their thoughts to what they want to learn winter quarter! I would like to make a plug for you to consider becoming a farm intern!

Interns on the farm register for 3 credits of biology 399. As an intern you will meet weekly with me and discuss in broad terms the ecology of agricultural systems. Interns cover in depth the following ideas as they relate to farming: Soils, Pest Management, and Crop Planning.

In addition to learning theory about sustainable farming interns will also get practice helping run the farm at UW. We will be working at the current Botany Greenhouse farm and also at the new CUH Farm space. It is our hope that this coming quarter interns will also be working with the leadership team from the Seattle Youth Garden Project of Seattle Tilth.

Intern schedule is flexible, but each intern is required to work a minimum of 10 hours a week on the farm.

If you think this internship might be a good fit for you, please be in touch with me soon as I will be choosing this winter quarter's interns soon!

Thanks again for all your work on the farm.

Sincerely,
Beth
