[TheUWfarm] First Dirty Dozen Meeting!!

Hey Farmers!

Welcome back to a beautiful fall at UW! This email is to announce the first Dirty Dozen meeting of the quarter!! The Dirty Dozen (DD) is the core volunteer group at the farm. We meet for one hour a week to make a To-Do list and learn basic skills of farming. DD members then volunteer two hours a week of their time working down at the farm. Meetings for fall quarter will happen on Tuesdays at 7:30am at the Botany Greenhouse space.

I am so looking forward to leading DD this fall and can't wait to see both new and returning faces! If you've never come out before but would like to get more hands-on at the farm, this is your chance! There is lots to do right now to prepare both the CUH and Botany Greenhouse spaces for Winter and to get them ready for the next planting season.

People typically bring some kind of breakfast item, baked good, or fruit to share to the meetings, and it's always a fun way to get the morning going. For this first meeting, bring something to share if you'd like! We'll divide up who brings breakfast for the following weeks in the quarter at the meeting.

Hope to see you on Tuesday! Have a fantastic second week :)

[TheUWfarm] New Farmer Orientation FRIDAY!

Hey everybody!

This Friday from 12-3 we'll be holding a New Farmer Orientation at the Botany Greenhouse (BGH) Site! If you're brand new to the farm, or just want to get more involved this year, then this is for you! For the first hour and a half we'll be meeting at the BGH to talk about how the farm works, ways to get involved with the farm, and how to do certain tasks on the farm.

For the second half, we'll all head over to the other farm site near the Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH) to join in on the work party that will be happening over there. Its not a super short trip to the CUH, so if you've got a bike, bring one, if not we've got some you can borrow. We'll also have a walking group for those of you who prefer to travel by foot.

Hope to see you there!

-Mollie

[TheUWfarm] Fall Leadership Retreat 2012

Hello, Farmers!

It is time to rally for the UW Farm Fall Leadership Retreat, 2012! If you are a leader, or you want to be a leader, or don't know if you want to be a leader but think that the Farm is awesome and want to get more involved, this weekend is for you!

Last year, this weekend really pulled together the core of the UW Student Farm, and I know I felt much more closely bonded to my fellow farmers afterwards. Even when we saw one another to talk about business, there was still the underlying tie of friendship that is what makes the UW Farm my favorite part of my university experience.
Not only will you come away from this weekend with some new and deeper friendships, but you will also learn! We have a lot of things in the works, from team building games and exercises to visioning sessions for what we as student leaders want to see happen on the farm this year (as well as catch folks up on summer developments). There will be space to talk about new and ongoing projects, voice any frustrations you may have, and dream about the future of our farm. When I attended last year as a fresh-faced dewy-eyed new Farm leader, I learned many strategies and tools for being a good educator, constructively participating in discussions, and planning effectively.
There will also be free time and shared meal time, to explore the island and hang out.

If this all sounds like something you would like to be a part of, read below for logistics!

The retreat is the last weekend in September, Sat 29th-Sun30th. If many people cannot make it, we may try for the first weekend in October instead, but the 29th is the date we first confirmed with Beth and we would like to keep it as that. We will be going to Whidbey Island, where we will either stay at Skyroot Farm or possibly at another nearby location that would allow us all to sleep under the same roof. We will arrive at Skyroot Farm by 11:00 AM Saturday, and leave in the late afternoon on Sunday.

What I would like from attendees:
Name
Phone Number
Email Address
Vehicle?
If so, how many does it seat?
Tent?
Sleeping bag?
Are there any time restrictions that would not allow you to stay for the entire retreat?
Any other questions/comments you may have

I would like this information from everyone who plans on attending by Monday so that I can sort out rides. Earlier is better, so I can let Beth know how many are coming and she can talk to her contact about the potential other site for sleeping. If folks would prefer to bicycle, I'm sure there are others so inclined and you should talk to eachother!

Fondly,
Rae

[TheUWfarm] Pizza Bake/Bike Tour Saturday!

Hey everybody!

Two awesome events are happening this Saturday (the 22nd) at the farm!

1. Green Food Bike Tour 10am to noon! Join old and new farmers alike in touring some of the cool food related spots on and near campus. Bring a bike if you've got one, but if not we've got some you can use! See the Dawg Daze event description here.

2. Pizza Bake from 12-3pm! Bake your own pizza in the farm's very own wood fired pizza oven! Remember to bring a topping to share and/or a small donation to cover the cost of food. And if you're musically inclined be sure to bring your instrument! We can always use extra hands, so if you're interested in helping set up or clean up, please plan on coming early (anytime after 10am) or staying a little late.

See you Saturday!

-Mollie

[TheUWfarm] Student-lead seminar about Cooperatives in Society this fall!

Hey everyone,

The UW Student Food Cooperative is leading a seminar on cooperatives in the United States during Fall Quarter. We will be exploring what the cooperative model entails in concept and practice, as well asvarious organizations that utilize this model. We will attempt to illuminate the advantages and disadvantages of running a business or organization under this model.

This seminar will consist mostly of group discussions and light reading. We will meet for an hour once a week, on Wednesdays, in Smith at 12:30. The seminar is open on the Autumn Time schedule under Geography 499.

If you're interested in looking at alternative economic models, ways to organize communities, or just want to take a fun one credit course, then this is the seminar for you. Please email if you have any questions.

Best,
Teresa Barnes and Aleksandr Robbins

[TheUWfarm] FREE "Symphony of Soil" Film Screening 9/29!

Hey farmers!

On Sept. 29th there will be a screening of the new film, Symphony of the Soil, directed by Deborah Koons Garcia and featuring UW's own (and seriously awesome) Prof. David Montgomery! The event will take place at Town Hall and is free for UW Students! See Prof. Montgomery's message about the event and the event flyer below:

Dear friends at UW Farm,

I'm hoping that you can help spread the word about a special Seattle Town Hall screening of Deborah Koons Garcia's new movie Symphony of the Soil on Saturday, September 29th.  Her previous movie The Future of Food was fabulous and her new on is also an amazing movie.  I am proud to appear in it and Deborah has asked me to play some music, talk about the film, and sign copies of my new book The Rocks Don't Lie at the screening.  We'd greatly appreciate help in advertising the event to anyone interested in food, sustainability, and our most fundamental overlooked resource—fertile soil!

It is free for UW students!

Sincerely,
David R. Montgomery
