[TheUWfarm] Mushroom work

Hey all,
So there will be more mushroom work this coming week as we only got 9 of the 32 maple logs inoculated, so there will be inoculations being done this wed from 2-5pm and sat 10am until the maple logs are all inoculated, probably around 4pm. So anyone interested can drop by sometime during those times at the botany greenhouse on campus. Thank you very much to those who came on sat, and to everyone enjoy a hot sunny week and have a happy 4th of July!
Ryan

[TheUWfarm] Mushroom logs

Hey farm community,
This Saturday there will be 32 maple logs to inoculate with dowels of shiitake and some lions mane mushrooms. If you're interested we'll be working at the botany greenhouse from about 1-4:30pm, although we could be done sooner, I'm not sure, haven't inoculated this many logs at once before. Also if you want feel to bring along some of you're own logs to inoculate as there should be plenty of extra dowels, hardwoods work the best, especially oak, and preferably between two weeks and a few months since being cut, and between 4 and 12 inches in diameter although more would be fine.
Hope to see ya guys there,
Ryan Thummel

[TheUWfarm] Farewell Farm ~ Meet Sarah!

Hello Farm community,

I have had a wonderful four years with the Farm, and am so grateful for all I've learned and the great people I've met during this time. I have so enjoyed serving as the Farm's student coordinator at the CUH site this year.

I am excited to introduce the Farm's new on-staff Farm manager, Sarah Geurkink! She will be the point-person for the Farm's relationship with HFS, the CUH, and UW academics. She will also be a support for student farmers, and consistent presence at our Farm space at CUH. With questions, you can shoot her an email at sgeurk@u.washington.edu.

If you're free, go on down to the CUH and say hi tomorrow (Monday) 1-4 pm, and stay tuned for summer Farm hours!

Fondly,

Rachel

[TheUWfarm] Bee Course

Hello everyone!

As people may already know, honeybees and other pollinators play a significant role in the farming community, making foods like tomatoes and almonds possible for us to enjoy. If learning more about this and practical hands-on beekeeping sounds interesting to you, and you will be around during the summer, you should totally check out the bee course! Here's a little blurb:

Science With Bees! Biology 399C is now open for enrollment. You will learn beekeeping skills, contribute to the bee program as an intern, and conduct
experiments using the UW Farm bee hives. Honey bees are fascinating study subjects and there is a tremendous need for research in order to assist beekeepers in keeping healthy hives. This is an internship program and students will be expected to assume certain responsibilities as they learn the many skills of beekeeping. At the end of the summer, you will be a practiced beekeeper prepared to manage your own hives. We celebrate the end of the term with a honey harvest and pizza bake! Enrollment is limited to 15 people. Before enrolling, you must receive an add code and sign a waiver. Contact instructor for more info.

Do not let it sound intimidating if you have never done beekeeping before -- it was one of my best experiences at the UW and I never had any experience prior. Contact the instructor, Evan Sugden, at easugden@uw.edu for add codes/waivers. People are also welcome to contact me if they have additional questions about what the internship entails.

Thank you for listening. I hope to meet some of you soon :)

And for those not accustomed to my bee emails, they usually end with a random picture, so here you go:
