[TheUWfarm] Spring at the CUH Farm!

Hey friends,

Before we all retreat into our end-of-quarter study holes, I'd like to offer a spot of future brightness with a glimpse at Farm opportunities at the CUH farm site in the Spring time.

Weekly CUH work hours for Spring Quarter will be:

M: 12:30-3:30
W: 1-4
F: 12:30-3:30
Sat: (every other, times still tentative) 10-2

If your interest is piqued, I'd love to hear from you. Shoot me an email. Also be on the look out in your classes for class-linked Service Learning opportunities at the Farm (through UW's Carlson Center - your prof will let you know).

There'll be an email forthcoming about opportunities at the Botany Greenhouse site soon as well!

Thanks y'all,

Rachel

[TheUWfarm] Exciting updates: UW's Food Future

Hi Farmers,

Lauren and I had a very encouraging meeting last week with Julia Parrish, the Director of the Program on the Environment, about the future of our beloved UW Farm and food studies at UW.

Here are some exciting upcoming developments as the Farm continues to expand in the coming year...

Farm Manager Staff Position

Housing Food Services, the College of the Environment, and the School of Public Health are joining forces to fund a part-time position to support students in the dizzying logistic work of coordinating the various UW Farm sites, including the new site at Mercer Hall opening in Autumn 2013. The goal is for this position to be funded by UW Farm produce sales as we continue to earn revenue selling to the UW Dining Halls. This person will have experience in in both farm management and working with university student leaders. Interviews will begin in the next few weeks, and if all goes well, this person will begin transitioning into their role this Spring Quarter!

Food-Themed Living-Learning Community in Mercer Hall, 2013-14

Starting this Fall, students will be able to live their dorm experience as part of a Living-Learning Community themed around Food! The community will be housed in the new Mercer Hall dorm, and their experiential activities will include working on and harvesting from the Mercer farm space and cooking together in the new dorm kitchen facilities.

Nutrition and Food Studies Minors, and New Food Courses

Starting this fall, there will be a Nutrition minor offered through the School of Public Health. In addition, a Food Studies minor is in the works, complete with many new and returning food-related courses! Brand new courses for the minor's core will most likely be offered starting this fall through the College of the Environment (C ENV), and the UW Farm's beloved "Urban Farm" and "Farm Lunch Seminar" classes, which were recently discontinued by the Biology department, will again be offered, this time through C ENV.

"Food at UW" Website

A new site is up and in the works, with the aim of compiling information on the many options and personal connections available for "Foodies" at UW: http://depts.washington.edu/coenv/food/

Check it out, and email coenv@uw.edu with info on any organizations, courses, or people you think should be included on the page to make these opportunities available to our future UW foodies!

-----------

Thanks you all. Feel free to email me with any questions about these opportunities, and I'll be happy to point you in the direction to find out more info.

Fondly in Sun and Showers,

Rachel

[TheUWfarm] UWSFC Student Leadership Opportunity

A message from our friends at the UW Student Food Co-Op! Read on...

And hope to see y'all for pizza tomorrow + Arboretum fun times Saturday!

---------------

Dear UW Farm community,

The UW Student Food Co-operative is a group of students hoping to better the UW food system by working to create opportunities for providing affordable, sustainable, and ethical food to the UW community. Currently, we are doing this through a small Bulk Buying Club which we would like to expand, hopefully by connecting with different farms and suppliers in the Seattle area.

We are looking for someone, or a small group of people, to help us direct the Bulk Buying Club! Specifically, we would love someone who:
  • Is passionate about sustainable, high-quality, organic, local food
  • Has experience/would like to gain experience connecting with small, local farms
  • Is able to commit 10 hours a week to this project

In exchange, we can give you:
  • support system of peers who are also interested in sustainable, high-quality, organic, local food
  • The opportunity to make a huge change in the way our campus views food
  • Experience working with farmers and distributors
We are also looking for members who have experience with marketing and technological skills!

Please pass along this information to anyone you know who would be interested! We can be reached by info@uwsfc.com.

If you'd just like to stop by a meeting and join in the fun, we meet every Monday at 6:30pm in various locations! Email us above to find out the room for the week!

Thanks for all your help,

The UW Student Food Co-operative

[TheUWfarm] RE: TheUWfarm Digest, Vol 170, Issue 1

We seek applications from graduate students in plant breeding and seed
system research for the second annual Student Organic Seed Symposium.

The event will be held at Washington State University's Research
Center in Mount Vernon, Washington, from August 4 - August 7, 2013.

The Student Organic Seed Symposium aspires to build a community of
graduate students interested in plant breeding and seed systems for
organic agriculture. The symposium will include workshops, seminars,
tours of local organic businesses, field demonstrations of student
research and networking opportunities.

Twenty-five graduate students will be selected by a committee to
participate in the 2013 symposium. We welcome applications from
graduate students in diverse fields of study including but not limited
to: sociology, economics, crop and soil science, plant breeding, plant
pathology and genetics. Applicants must demonstrate a strong personal
interest in or be conducting research related to organic or
alternative agricultural systems.

Application forms should be sent via email to
organicseedsymposium@gmail.com by February 22, 2013.

The cost of the four day event will be $125 dollars, which includes
food, lodging and transportation during the symposium. Selected
participants are responsible for travel to and from Mt. Vernon,
Washington. Limited scholarships are available to cover the Symposium
fee.

A tentative symposium schedule, event flyer, and application form are
attached. They can also be accessed at
https://sites.google.com/site/studentorganicseedsymposium/

Thanks to Clif Bar Family Foundation for generously sponsoring the
event, with donations from Washington State University (WSU) and
support from Organic Seed Alliance. This year's symposium is being
organized by graduate students from Washington State University,
University of Wisconsin and Penn State. Please email the committee
with questions at organicseedsymposium@gmail.com

Join Witness for Peace Northwest on their sustainable agriculture delegation to Cuba!

In Cuba, 80% of fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, and medicinal plants are consumed locally by urban residents. It has been called the only "sustainably developed" country in the world. If everyone on Earth followed Cuba's example, we would only need the resources of one planet to sustain our population indefinitely--as compared to the 4.1 planets we'd need if everyone lived like we do in the U.S. What is Cuba doing differently to ensure the long-term health of their land and people?

On this professional research trip from April 17th-27th, 2013 you will learn about Cuba's transition from conventional farming to low-input sustainable agriculture through visiting organic urban gardens, small and large farms, sugar mills, schools, and more. You will meet with urban and rural residents to learn techniques and ideas that can be brought back to the United States and shared with our communities, in order to learn how to create a more sustainable future worldwide.

The cost of the delegation is $1,990, which includes all set-up, preparation, meals, lodging, interpreters, airfare from Miami to Havana, and ground transportation within Cuba. You will need to provide your own airfare to Miami. All applications are due by March 15th, so please be in touch soon to reserve your spot! Contact Amy: amy@witnessforpeace.org

Why would the Farm have a work party at the Arboretum? You may well ask. In exchange for our farm space at the Center for Urban Horticulture, we help out the UW Botanical Gardens group (who manage both the CUH and the Arboretum) with 20 service hours each month.

Let's get lots of service hours racked up at this work party so we can focus ALL our attention on our lovely farm this Spring/Summer!!

[TheUWfarm] Wheelbarrow of Love

Hey y'all!

Just a reminder that tomorrow at 5pm down at the CUH we are going to be gathering and putting together the swiss chard bouquets for V-day! Anyone and everyone is welcome to help out.

Also, if you are interested (which many people have responded!) in handing them out on the 14th, I would love your help! We will start at 10:30am in the Botany Greenhouse and go around campus from there until around 2:30 or 3 (or until we run out).

Happy Tuesday :)

[TheUWfarm] Valentine's Day Farm Event!

Hey Farmers!

Next Thursday, we are doing Valentine's Day good 'ol farm style - A Wheelbarrow of Love. Which means, we are handing out bouquets of swiss chard to people all over campus.

We would love it if you could join us in making the bouquets down at the CUH on Wednesday afternoon at 5pm. We will be harvesting the chard and tying it up nice and pretty with ribbon and a little card attached that mentions the upcoming pizza bake on February 22nd. If you need directions to the CUH they can be found here.

If you are also interested in helping handing out the bouquets on V-Day, we need people to take over shifts. Please contact me if you want to put a smile on someone's face! It is going to be a lot of fun and a great way to spend the day.

Cheers,

[TheUWfarm] Summer farming internship

Do you have plans for the summer! Here is a really cool opportunity to do a potentially paid internship with a farm in the Snoqualmie Valley. Jane Reis, the farmer/director, is trying out an interesting new model of community farming by offering space for community groups and families to grow on "mini farms" and paying interns to work as personal farmers.

If you are interested, I really encourage you to look at the job description and email Jane, she is very eager and excited to get started, and needs a lot of help!
