[TheUWfarm] Fridays + MLK day - Farm/CUH service hours!

Hi Farmers,

The Farm needs help completing service hours for the Center for Urban Horticulture in exchange for our space there!

You can be such a big help! Every other Friday starting this Friday, the 18th 12:30-3 pm we'll be down there pulling invasives near the Farm site and/or helping with indoor tasks. Please come join - just one hour of your time will get us that much closer to the 20 h/month exchange rate!

Also, this MLK Day, Monday the 21st from 2-5 pm, a small group from the Washington Conservation Corps is coming down to tour the CUH farm and help with service hours. All are welcome - please come on down! Email me with any questions.

Thanks y'all. Enjoy the sunshine and those hefty wool socks,

[TheUWfarm] Tour leading workshop this week!

Hey everybody!

Want to improve your public speaking skills? Build your resume? Or just get more involved at the farm? Consider becoming a UW Farm tour guide! We are always in need of more people to lead tours, and you don't have to have any experience with tour giving, and only minimal experience volunteering at the farm. This week we will be having a "tour of tours," which is a workshop on how to lead tours at the farm.

Even if you don't think you're ready to lead tours yet, but might be interested in doing so in the future, this workshop is for you! The workshop will be 2 hours long and will provide you with a tour giving framework and lots of helpful skills, information and ideas to help kickstart your tour giving career! After attending the workshop, you can sign up to shadow other guides on some upcoming tours to build your confidence before you begin leading tours yourself.

The workshop will take place either this Wednesday or Thursday. If interested, please click here to inform us of your availability on a doodle poll ASAP!

If you have any questions, feel free to email me (Mollie) at mollietarte@gmail.com

Cool internship opportunity!

Hi Eliza,

My name is Wendi and I work with the Just Garden Project. We build subsidized food gardens for low income families in their homes and
communities every year. We offer several internships and this year I wanted to outreach to students who were studying food systems and who may have an interest in non-profit work. The internship descriptions and application process can be found at:
http://justgarden.org/volunteers/internships/.

I saw that you teach the UW Urban Farms class so I thought you might be a good person to contact. If you know any students who may be interested in this work, could you please pass this information on to them? Additionally, if you know of other professors, departments etc that would have an interest in this work, would you mind passing their information along?

  Thank you so much!

Dear Professor Reichard,

I wanted to get in touch with you about internship opportunities on two grassroots campaigns in Seattle this semester. Rainier bottled-water free.

Below are two interest forms with a description of each campaign and internship:

[TheUWfarm] Winter Quarter '13 on the UW Farm

Hey Farm friends,

Read on for information on ways to have fun and make change with the UW Farm during Winter Quarter 2013!

At a glance:

  • Farm leadership interest retreat 1/11-13
  • CUH Farmsite
  • Dirty Dozen
  • Credited internships (BIOL 399)
  • Green Team
  • Outreach
  • Bees

Best,

Rachel

Farm leadership interest retreat!

Interested in getting more involved with leadership at the UW Farm? Then the winter quarter farm leadership retreat is for you! On the first weekend of winter quarter (Jan. 11th-13th) a bunch of UW farmers will be heading out to a beach cabin on the Hood Canal to talk about leadership, the future of the farm, and just to have a good fun time! We will be heading out Friday evening (Jan. 11th) and folks will be returning on both Saturday evening and Sunday morning. It is about a 1.5 to 2 hour drive, transportation is provided.

If you're interested in coming along, or if you'd just like some more information, please contact Mollie at mollietarte@gmail.com

Friday afternoons at CUH

During Winter quarter, Rachel would love to see you down at the CUH on Friday afternoons from 12:30-3:30! Every other week we'll have a group of 3rd grade volunteers helping out, and alternate weeks we'll be working on projects (coldframes? worm bins??). Then come February it'll be time to start seedlings in the greenhouse!!!

Email Rachel at rachelnstubbs@gmail.com for more information

Dirty Dozen

Please email Lauren (laurbear2@gmail.com) if you'd like to be added to the Dirty Dozen

listserve for Winter Quarter! We are currently working on finalizing a time and day, but if you have a preference there is a Doodle Poll you can vote on. This Winter we'll be focusing on learning a lot more about urban farming through discussions about set topics every week. We'll delve into whatever the group is interested in, but can cover anything and everything from plant physiology to GMOs! In addition, with extra down time this winter, we'll work on beautifying projects for the farm, such as making signs for beds or creating more educational signs for the farm. As the season progresses we'll start our spring seedlings as well!

Farm internships

A few spots are still available for 3-credit internships that involve
reading, discussion, and application of urban agriculture principles,
culminating in an individual project benefitting UW's student farm.
Applicants with some prior UW-farm practical experience are preferred,
since that serves as a motivation for the more conceptual learning that
occurs during weekly meetings.

"JENNIFER RUESINK" <ruesink@u.washington.edu>,

Green Team

If you'd like to be a part of the crop-season planning process, join the Green Team during Winter Quarter! For the first few weeks we will work on finalizing a seed order and a planting plan for the upcoming season. After these immediate tasks are completed, the we will work on larger projects, including compiling a binder to document what is planted on the farm and past years of what has been planted. We'll also review any existing crop rotation plans and think about long term crop planning and rotation ideas.

We are tentatively setting meeting time for Tuesday or Thursday mornings before 11:30. More info to come. Contact Lauren at laurbear2@gmail.com with some times you're available if you're interested!

Farm Outreach

Contact June and Hilary if you're interested in helping with Farm outreach as we prepare for our busy Spring season. Pizza Bakes, posters, events, and more! The sky's the limit.
