[TheUWfarm] On the farm this week!

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to let you know my farm hours this week and what's going to be going on, because we didn't make a to-do-list for this week yet!
I think I'm going to be starting a good amount of early spring crops (yipee!) As well as starting to prepare some of the beds for planting! We will also be continuing compost building (hopefully), weeding, and organizing the planting calender for spring!

I also wanted to let everyone know (current Dirty Dozen and general farm crew) that dirty dozen Spring quarter is going to be Monday mornings once again! 7:30-8:30!
I think it's the best time, and it should be easier to get up now that it's getting lighter/warmer out!

Here's next quarter DD sign up sheet:

and here are my hours this week:
Tuesday: 9:30-1:30
Wednesday: 11:30-1:30
Thursday: 9:30-1:30
Friday: 11:30-2:30 (WORK PARTY 12:30-2:30!!)

[TheUWfarm] Leadership and education - next quarter and beyond!

Hey Farmers!

It was so great to see some of you today at the leadership lunch and retreat. I had a really great time, and I hope you did too!

Unfortunately, we did not really get to talking about tours today, but that just means we get to have another workshop-potluck combo!
I'm thinking that because we only have two weeks left of the quarter, most people will be really busy. Therefore I am tentatively scheduling a tour of tours - a comprehensive skill share about everything education on the farm - for Sunday, April 1st. This is an event for everyone! Old, new, experienced or not, please come learn and share and have fun!

Also, today we talked a bit about next years leadership positions. We hope to appoint next years leaders by a early next quarter, so if you are considering taking on a leadership role, please check out these position descriptions, or contact the people whose position you are interested in. Again, these positions do not require a lot of prior experience, this year's leaders want to help you succeed! Feel free to contact me with any questions.

To sustainability and beyond!

Bennett Rahn

[TheUWfarm] Learn about Leadership Retreat- Today!

Hey farmers!

Just a reminder that the Learn About Leadership Retreat will be held today, from 11-3. We'll be having a potluck style lunch at 11. After that current farm leaders will explain what their positions entail and how to complete some tasks on the farm. If you are interested in being a farm leader next year, want to learn how to give tours of the farm, or just want to learn a little more about how the farm operates this retreat is for you!

Hope to see you there!

Sunday, Feb 26th is our much anticipated Winter Leadership Retreat!  It will take place from 11-3 at the Botany Greenhouse space.  Are you are a farm leader?  Do you think you maybe have a great idea for the farm, and want to take leadership on it?  Do you just really love the farm and want to get more involved?  This event is for you!  It is the perfect opportunity to get to know current farm leaders, what they do and how they do it, and do some work on the farm.  We will be providing a delicious lunch, and setting up games and workshops.  Come by and check it out!

Also in the last week of February is our All Farm Meeting, from 6-7 at the Botany Greenhouse space.  Great if you want to learn more or catch yourself up on the farm goings-on and meet some of the farm regulars!

[TheUWfarm] (no subject)

Hello Farmers!

I am working on a research project to create an aerated compost pile for the UW farm that will efficiently produce compost without needing to manually turn the pile.

For this project, I need one of these, basically an air mattress inflator. I am trying to dip into the farm budget as little as possible, so I was wondering if anyone has one that they don't use or need. If so, can you send me an email?

Thank you! Stay dirty...

[TheUWfarm] Fwd: [seattlefarmcoop] Survey re: Farming on City-owned Land

FYI:

Dear Friends of Urban Agriculture,

The City of Seattle is considering making City-owned land available for commercial farming. We would like to get feedback and ideas from people who farm commercially in or outside of the city, or who would like to start farming in the city. You can help us by taking the survey linked to this e-mail.

The survey includes 15 questions and will take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Most questions do not require an answer, but the more you answer the better we are able to understand your needs as a farmer.! Here is the link:

The UW Clowes Center for the Study of Conflict and Dialogue is proud to announce our 2011-12 quarterly film and speaker series.  Our subject this year isRethinking Citizenship, Democracy and Activism: Local-Global Entanglements.  Each screening is free of charge, and we welcome your attendance.

In winter quarter, we will screen The Future of Food, a documentary about the complex technology and key regulatory, legal, ethical, environmental and consumer issues surrounding the changes happening in the food system today, directed by Deborah Koons Garcia.  Our guest speaker will be Heather Day, Co-Founder of the Community Alliance for Global Justice and UW alumnus.
Thursday, February 16th at 2:30pm in UW's Allen Auditorium.

Our spring quarter film will be 23rd and Union.  Directed by Rafael Flores, this docu-drama weaves real interviews with fictional characters to investigate the 2008 murder of Degene Berecha in the popular Seattle restaurant "Philadelphia Cheese-Steak".  The film is an ADAPTED story, based on a range of stories by people acquainted with the victim and convicted murderer.  It is used as a vehicle to discuss gentrification and the tension between young African-American men, Ethiopian immigrants and gay couples in Seattle's Central District.  Flores will be on hand after the screening for a discussion period.
Date and location TBD.

For more information, please see our website: http://depts.washington.edu/clowes1/.
We look forward to seeing you at the screenings!
