[TheUWfarm] fall leaves and summer veggies

Hi Farmers,

I've been seeing a ton of red and green tomatoes on the bushes that, with the cold, ain't getting much riper. The green ones will turn red if they're left in a paper bag for a few days, so stock up!

Also - Grounds is dumping a ton of dry leaves at the site by the greenhouse. We should stash them for present and future composting (brown material to go with green). There are trash bags in the greenhouse (huge black ones on your right in a white cardboard box as you walk in from Area A) and they can go in the big wire cages by the gravel loading dock (where the cob oven is, in front of the three bins).

[TheUWfarm] (no subject)

Hi! I'm interested in being on the mailing list.
Thank you!

[TheUWfarm] Welcome back - policies for the listserve & newsletter

Hey everyone - welcome back!

Starting next week we will again be instituting weekly newsletters for the farm. This is to encourage everyone not to abuse the listserve - people have been frustrated with the high volume of emails sent out. However, we want your voice to be heard! If you have an announcement that is directly related to the farm, go ahead and post it on the listserve. If you have something farm/food related, like an interesting article, a community event, a local workshop, a cool organization, internship opportunity....let's try to put it in the newsletter if at all possible.

Here's how:
1) send me an email at harveym@uw.edu or michelle.ann.harvey@gmail.com. This is the best option.
-or- 2) send uwfarm@uw.edu an email (this is the farm's personal email account)

The newsletter will go out Sunday evenings, so please try to have submissions to me by Saturday night.
We have one coming out this coming Sunday, so feel free to send things my way in the next few days!

If for some reason I won't be putting it in the newsletter (which is rare), I'll let you know.

(also - remember that you can post on our facebook fan page at any time! The more the better! Just "like" the page and you'll be able to post....we'd love to see more go up on that page! [we currently have 311 fans])

[TheUWfarm] next pizza bake?

Hey all - I'm an RA in the dorms, and I'm getting a lot of interest from my residents about going to a pizza bake at the farm. Has the date/time of the next one been decided yet? Thanks! -Gennie

[TheUWfarm] Welcome Back!

Hello!!!!! and Welcome Back!
Autumn quarter is upon us and there's as always loads of work to be done at the farm. I will be down at the farm tomorrow from 12:30-3:20 making last attempts to get in some crops, sowing cover crop, hanging with the chickens, and other farm stuff. I hope to see many of you there.

Cheers,
Nina

[TheUWfarm] Chicken Crew is full, but ...

We've filled all the shifts for the quarter, but we can still use people as subs. If you're interested in being a sub, or maybe helping out with chickens in other ways, please fill out the brief survey:
https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/kamiller/112311

If you're not subscribed to the Gallus listserv yet, see link below. "Gallus gallus Domesticus" = chicken! I will subscribe everyone who completes the survey.
https://mailman1.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/gallus

To all the newer people who want to get involved with the UW Farm, don't worry there's plenty of work to be done on the farm, not only chickens. Stay tuned to theuwfarm@uw.edu listserv for upcoming announcements about more opportunities...

[TheUWfarm] Tilth Adult Education Administrative Internship

Greetings!

I'm a student at the UW that started working with the UWfarm (some of you may recognize the name, despite the email being different), and ended up at an internship working with Seattle Tilth this summer. As I return to school/ work/ etc. in the fall my stint as the Adult Ed Intern ends and my supervisors are currently looking for my replacement.

If you'd like an internship this fall (10-15 hours/ week) that is local and for an AMAZING organization with FANTASTIC people, I suggest you go to http://seattletilth.org/get-involved/volunteer/index_html and scroll down to the "internships" listing. There you will find a description of the internship as well as instructions on applying. Basically you need to fill out a volunteer application, then email a resume and an introduction to (both) careythornton@seattletilth.org & katiepencke@seattletilth.org

I've had an amazing time working in and out of the office with Tilth, and truly come to respect the capacity for furthering organic urban farming that this organization shows. My internship ends in just a couple of weeks, so jump on it! I look forward to training the next intern.

Happy Gardening,

[TheUWfarm] volunteers for Imaging America conference Friday

Hello All.
This is just a reminder that a group of folks attending the Imagining America conference will be coming down to tour and have a discussion at the UW Farm about urban agriculture on college campuses. The farm is going to be a great space to address some of the issues of the conference: public scholarship, collaboration, and direct democracy. Anyway we will be needing some volunteers to help out with the set up, clean up,and participation in discussion. The event is going to be from 11- 5 including set up and clean up, however you can also commit to either 3 hours in the beginning 11-2 or 3 hours at the end 2-5 that way you don't have to do both set up and clean up and all can still enjoy pizza at 2:30. We will be having an awesome discussion also at 3:30 with our guests and possible community collaborators like alley cat acres. If you'd like to participate please follow this link and fill out the catalyst poll.

https://catalyst.uw.edu/quickpoll/vote/arlein/4740

Thanks a bunch for your help! Its going to be a great event!
Best,
Nina

[TheUWfarm] The Garden screening tonight!

This is just a reminder that "The Garden" is being screened tonight! For those of you who haven't seen it, it's definitely worth your time. Details below:

Social Justice Film Series: The Garden

The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country's most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community. But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis. The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers: Why was the land sold to a wealthy developer for millions less than fair-market value? Why was the transaction done in a closed-door session of the LA City Council? Why has it never been made public?

The movie's trailer can be found here.

For more information on the event, please visit the WA Community Action Network website.

There will also be a training about "Campaigning in the Digital Age" put on by the same organization on September 17th. In this training, we will analyze and discuss the what and how of campaign strategy in the age of digital organizing. The seminar will look at a number of campaigns combining online and offline organizing to effect change, with a special focus including Presente.org's Basta Dobbs campaign (www.bastadobbs.com), the successful effort to remove Lou Dobbs from CNN. We will look at & discuss how the campaign fused traditional, offline organizing methods with online and other new media organizing methods, how we became media to defeat Media. After studying examples of successful strategy development, we will
take a hands-on, practical session that applies principles and practices learned to a specific campaign.

This day-long training is $50 and has very limited space available. Please contact danisha@nwfco.org for more information.

Both events will be held at Southside Commons, 3518 S. Edmunds St.

[TheUWfarm] Learn from a sustainable organization and win a trip to Portland....

Hey all,

Sorry this isn't directly farm-related (a good example of something that will be included in farm newsletters during the school year! Remember to send me or uwfarm@uw.edu your submissions....first newsletter of the year goes out at the beginning of October), but I thought it was still relevant to the interests of many UW Farm people!

I've been working with an environmental research and policy think tank called Sightline Institute all summer, and they're currently on the lookout for one northwesterner (and guest) to send to Portland for three days (train tickets, hotel, meals, and activities included). All you have to do is help spread the word about their daily and weekly emails before October 1.

If you're not already subscribed, start by signing up: http://www.sightline.org/Sweepstakes/sign-up-sightline-sweepstakes/. Then, get out your address book and use this form to ask your friends to sign up: http://www.sightline.org/Sweepstakes/refergen2. For every new subscriber your recruit, you'll be entered to win. It's as easy as that.

You can choose the daily update or weekly update option - you'd get awesome updates about sustainable news stories in the northwest and updates on Sightline's blog posts. I truly wouldn't be passing this along if I didn't think their site was great. Check out their blog here. :)

Thanks for helping out Sightline!

[TheUWfarm] Dirty Dozen volunteer position

Hello,

My name is Jacob King and I am enrolled in ANTH 488 (Agroecology) for the fall quarter. I would be very interested in taking a volunteer position on the farm. However, I do not have a lot of experience with farming practices of my own. I only have exposure through the farm I grew up on as a child in which I was partially involved. I also have been exposed to various gardens of friends and family throughout my life. I will be very eager to learn new techniques and will be someone whom can be depended upon. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

[TheUWfarm] Dirty Dozen Volunteers:

Hello Farmers:

We are looking to fill our dirty dozen crew this coming fall.   Dirty Dozen volunteers are the core group of UW farm workers - they literally 'make the farm run.' Each dirty dozen volunteer must commit to attending Friday morning meetings at 7:30 (all quarter long) in addition to volunteering for two hours of work each week. The Dirty Dozen orientation will be Saturday, October 2nd from 9 - noon. Becoming a dirty dozen volunteer is a great way to get involved in the farm. If you are interested please e-mail me soon!

Also, We have one remaining intern opening. If you are interested in becoming a farm intern - it isn't too late. Farm internships are 3 credits of biology 399. It requires ~10hours/week of time spent at the farm along with additional reading time and a weekly meeting. It is a great way to deepen your understanding of sustainable agriculture its practice in the Urban Environment. Please send a me a letter explaining your interest in the internship and then we can set up a time to meet!

Thanks Everyone!

Beth
(PS - I passed my exam so pending turning in the document I'm a doctor! - thanks for all your support).

BREAKING: Board of Park Commissioners votes YES on a recommendation for an urban farm at Atlantic City Nursery to Superintendent of Parks!

Dear Michelle Ann,

Yesterday, September 9th, the Board of Park Commissioners voted unanimously, with abstention, to recommend the establishment of an Urban Farm and Wetlands Restoration site at Atlantic City Nursery!

On behalf of the Friends of Atlantic City Nursery, I would like to thank you for your effort and support on this journey. In just nine months, we have moved closer to making the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands Project a reality. While this is a major milestone, there is still more process to go through and more work to do before the first vegetables are planted.

Next Steps

Although the Board voted Yes on the establishment of an Urban Farm and Wetlands Restoration site at the Atlantic City Nursery, the Parks and Recreation Superintendent will actually make the final decision. Once this decision has been made, Parks and Recreation will most likely issue a Request For Proposal (RFP) for organizations that would like to operate the Urban Farm and restore the wetlands.

To learn more about what this means for us, the Friends of Atlantic City Nursery, please come to our community meeting that is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, September 11 at 10:30 am at the Rainier Beach Library.

Once again, thank you for your support for this community-wide undertaking. We look forward to our continued partnership with you in our efforts to increase food security in Rainier Beach.

Sincerely,

[TheUWfarm] It's a new year and lot's to do on the farm!!

Hello everyone, I've been gone for a while but I'm now back and going to be hanging around the farm most days, so please, if you need something to do, come stop by and help/hang out! I know the to-do list hasn't been updated in a while and the farm is in a transition phase which can be overwhelming but we are gearing up for the fall and I am updating the to do list and planting chart starting today, so now is the perfect time to come down and check out what's going on!
Just some of the things I harvested today were cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, squash, and beans. So, come get dirty and fill up your fridge! I will be here tomorrow around 1 planting starts if that interests you!

Here is the to-do list, it will also be on the farm cabinet. If you have any questions feel free to ask me or even better trust yourself and take risks, that's what we're all about!!
happy fall!!

-Julia

UW Farm Updates

Updates for the Coming Year

Beth Wheat (who happens to be defending her thesis tomorrow September 8, at 10 am, in Fisheries 102 and would love to see you there) has some updates for the fall quarter:

Beth will be running the tuesday farm lunch seminar on Tuesdays from 12:30 - 1:20. If there are farmers who have a particular interest they'd like to explore it would be great to send ideas/speaker suggestions to Beth at elizaw@uw.edu. The seminar will focus on more or less equal parts reading/discussion partnered with visiting speakers this fall. The readings will focus on G.E. crops and sustainable agriculture. This is offered C/NC, but you don't have to register to show up!

We are looking for a stalwart crew of dirty dozen volunteers this fall. If you are interested please write to beth at elizaw@uw.edu.

Lastly - We have two interns this coming fall, but we'd be happy for one more. If you are interested in becoming a farm intern - it isn't too late. Farm internships are 3 credits of biology 399. It requires ~10/week of time spent at the farm along with additional reading time and a weekly meeting. Green Team - Planning the 2011 Growing Season

Hey all - the start of Fall quarter is approaching, and with it the season of dreaming up Farm veggies on the Green Team! Let me know if you might be interested in participating. I'll ask everyone I hear from about times that work for them for our first meeting in early October, before announcing it to Farm followers at large. Below is the description of the GT from August.

------------------------------------
Hi Farm Friends,

Rachel Stubbs here - future co-leader of the UW Farm Green Team. I have the fantastic job this year of heading up a group of people who'll plan what to plant, grow, and eat in 2011! As UW's fall quarter approaches, I hope you'll consider being involved in this exciting, educational, and essential part of the Farm.

Here's what the process might look like based on other years, conversations with previous Team members, and my time as a Dirty Dozen member and intern last year:

We'll meet once or twice a month during Fall Quarter with the aim of making a seed order and having a planting calendar in January. During these meetings, we'll brainstorm what crops we want on the Farm during the Spring, Summer, and Fall growing seasons, research the conditions and timing these plants need, and make a plan for their locations and time frames. Then starting with early Spring crops in February, the Farm will put the plan into action. We'll follow its progress, meeting at our convenience to touch base about what we see working and what could be improved for next year's plan. Throughout the process, we'll be working with the Farm Director, interns, Dirty Dozen, and other involved folks.

What's asked of Green Team Members:
- Consistent attendance at monthly/bimonthly meetings
- Willingness to do some outside research into the plants you love
- Thoughtful contribution to the ongoing improvement of the Team
- A creative and cooperative spirit in approaching the planning process

Why Green Team is going to be such a worthwhile experience:
- We'll learn a LOT about the essential elements of growing things
- We'll be able to make the UW Farm our own in a personal way
- We'll get to know other people who love the Farm and what happens there
- We'll get to decide just exactly what will go on our pizzas next year!

As you're vamping up for the coming Fall quarter, please think about whether you'd like to be part of the 2010-2011 Green Team. Email me with any questions, suggestions, or just as a heads-up on your interest. Can't wait to see y'all in the fall!

Edmunds St.

[TheUWfarm] thesis

Hello Farmers,

I hope that this missive finds you well. Several students have urged me to write to the list so that everyone knows I will be defending my thesis (its about oysters and shrimp) this coming Wednesday at 10AM in the Fisheries building rm 102.

The defense is open to the public and if you are interested it would be great for you to be there.

After the defense people will gather at the cob oven for cookies and snacks (so bring something to share).

The farm and many of the folks on this list have been really important to me in the journey of my Ph.D. Being part of this community with you all has been such a wonderful part of my time at UW.

Thanks for all you do & Happy Labor Day!

Sincerely,
Beth _______________________________________________
