[TheUWfarm] UW Farm Newsletter for December 9th

Farmers,

We hope everyone is having a wonderful finals season. We remind you that Farm volunteer hours and meetings will also break over the holiday, resuming in Winter Quarter.

Here's what's happening in and around the Farm this week:

MERCER COURT IS GETTING GROW LIGHTS! We're setting up a stellar micro-green growing operation at the Mercer Clubhouse. Come by Tuesday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm to help set them up and learn about growing indoors.

Farm Ed with Professor Ruesink meets Thursday from 8:30-9:30am in the Botany Greenhouse. This weeks topic: Find out how to cheaply measure microclimate temperature and look at the temperatures of compost piles and cold frames.

Still have room in your Winter Quarter schedule? Join us next quarter in a conversation about urban farming on our campus and beyond. Farm Lunch is a 1 credit seminar series in which we will explore what it takes to become a successful urban farmer on our campus and else where.  It will provide a unique opportunity to connect the work of growing food on campus with the larger context of our food system and its current environmental challenges. Farm lunch ENVIR 495B will be offered next quarter from 12:30 to 1:20 in ACC 120. You can register for it or just show up and participate.   We look forward to an active conversation and a dynamic, community centered learning environment. If you have a topic you would like to present or an idea you would like to explore during this time please contact Elizabeth: elizaw@uw.edu. Hope to see you there!

And finally, thanks to everyone for braving the cold last week to work at the Farm, we couldn't do this without you! Check out the pictures from the Arboretum work party.

[TheUWfarm] compost crew meeting 8-9 Oct 29

Farmers,

I plan to have a compost crew meeting this Tuesday (0ct 29) from 8-9am
as usual. We will harvest the compost and mix it with soil harvested
from Mercer. We will also have Prof Jenn Ruesink coming in to talk about
experimental method and design in ecology.

Please let me know if you ARE COMING so that I can call it off if no one
is (so Jenn doesn't have to talk to an empty room!!!). No need to reply
to this email if you plan to skip (I will totally understand. Blame the
quarter system). Thanks!

Enjoy the pretty autumn colors,

[TheUWfarm] Farm Ed - Thurs 9:30 at the Botany Greenhouse

This week's Farm Ed topic is "weeding". Learn what makes weeds
such effective occupants of farmed areas. Learn to identify some
of the common weeds. Get hands-on experience with the tools of the
trade for weed control. Weeds might not seem like such a compelling
topic for education, but they're a big part of what goes on in
Seattle's growing spaces at this time of year, and therefore
both fascinating and important agricultural topics. Farm Ed meets
each week at 9:30 Thursdays at the Botany Greenhouse, all invited.

Hi Farm Friends,

Is there a group or list of folks I can reach out to for help with field trips besides you two?  If so, send it along!

Also, I need help Friday.  The teacher changed plans around (of course) after I committed to a study group.  The schedule looks like this:

11:15-11:30 - Students arrive and have lunch (at farm or CUH if raining)
12-1 - Tour (of UW Farm with possible connection to restoration area)
1pm - creative writing (somewhere nearby - either outside the library or around the farm.

50 middle schoolers!!!  and 10 parent chaperones

I can be there around 12:10 - 1:10 so I just need someone to be around for lunch and writing, which the teacher will take care of.  And if ANYONE wants to help with the tour, we could probably split up the groups which would be way easier!

[TheUWfarm] Compost Crew Fall 2013

Hello all!

Thank you to those who have responded to the compost crew doodle poll.
This quarter's compost crew is going to meet weekly on Tuesday 8-9am...I
know, I know...not everyone can make it, and it's super early. BUT I
will be on the farm on Wednesday afternoons 4-6pm so if you can't make
it to the meetings on Tuesday you can still help out on Wednesdays. One
important note: if a Tuesday meeting is cancelled, or if I won't be on
the farm on Wednesdays, I will send out an email at least 24 hours in
advance.

Our first official meeting of the quarter will be on 1 October 8-9am.
This quarter we will be making hot compost as usual, picking up coffee
grounds from HBar, and possibly starting a vermicompost!

Email me if you have questions. See you soon.

Best and thanks,
Kay

Hey farmers!

This is a former farmer writing to let you know about an awesome local organization and an event coming up this weekend.

Eat for Equity organizes bi-monthly community dinners to benefit other great local organizations. We cook a delicious meal using donated local, organic ingredients, and invite friends, family and community members to an informal dinner for a good cause. We normally have 50-70 guests and have raised around $700 per dinner to donate to organizations like the Equitable Food Initiative and Queer Youth Space. Guest donations are on a sliding scale.

I'd love to invite you all to our next dinner this Saturday, September 21st at Picardo P-Patch in Wedgwood (see fancy invite below).

We're also always looking for new volunteers and organizers. If you're interested, please get in touch with me at dana.kublin@gmail.com or check out the sign-up sheet.

Would love to see you there, and please pass the word around to friends and family who would also be interested!

Sincerely,
Dana

[TheUWfarm] Doodle Poll for Fall 2013 UW Farm Compost Crew Weekly/Bi-weekly Meeting

Hi UW Farmers!

I apologize for the long hiatus this summer. Well, autumn has come and
our compost crew shall be back in action when school starts at the end
of September. If we have the time and enough people interested, we might
start our own worm compost!

So here's a doodle poll for anyone interested in joining/continuing to
join the Compost Crew this autumn:

http://www.doodle.com/4aedeixaaehvxrtp

Please respond asap and I will do my very best to set a weekly or
biweekly compost work party that works for you. As usual, no prior
experience needed, no set-in-the-stone commitment needed. Just drop by
when you can! Thank you all!

Yours,
Kay

[TheUWfarm] Mushroom log inoculations

Hey farmers,
There's going to be a mushroom inoculation work party on Tuesday the 17th from noon to 5pm at the botany greenhouse site. Anyone interested can show up at any point in that time period for as little or as much as they can. We'll be inoculating about 15 oak logs with shiitake plug spawn on the picnic bench just outside the greenhouse.
See y'all around
Ryan
