[TheUWfarm] Thank you farmers

Dobro vece seljaci,
Today was a big day for the farm, and I wanted to send out a note of thanks to all the people who made it possible. At lunch today, a group of UW Farmers got to have lunch with Will Allen, Julia Parrish (the head of POE), the head of Seattle Tilth, and many others from the campus and city involved in sustainable agriculture and food justice. It was truly inspiring to hear Will talk, and all the farmers there felt really lucky to get to meet him. He stated quite clearly that we have had enough talk about transforming our food system, now is the time for Action, which is exactly what the farm is trying to do right now as we seek access to more land on campus. This message was reverberated when Richard Conlin, Seattle City Council President announced to the group that Mayor Mcginn has made 2010 the Year of Urban Agriculture in Seattle! (see website below). The UW Farm must thank Julia Parrish of PoE for inviting us to this event, and Eddie Hill of Creatives4Community fo!
r making sure Will Allen also visited the farm.
After lunch, Will came up to the cob oven to meet a huge group of wet but enthusiastic farmers and friends of farmers. We gave him a short tour, and picked his brain about composting. After talking to him, many of us feel that we want to use the Back 40 for intensive compost production, for as he said, before you even start to think about growing food, you have to start growing soil. We need all the help we can get with this project, so now is the time to get involved. Will got to enjoy some of our signature cob oven pizza, thanks to the awesome efforts of Jeremy, Rachel and others in getting the oven fired, getting an sweet makeshift tent set up, and getting pizzas cooking. Anyway, I just wanted to give people who couldn't make it to today's events a recap, and let them know, along with the rest of campus, that a wave is building, and as UW Farmers we are about to not only push that wave, but also hop on for the ride of our lives.

In excitement,
Brady
