Come support UW Farm education at the Teaching and Learning Symposium!

When: April 19, 2-4:30
Where: Kane Hall

The UW Farm is an ongoing experiment in student directed learning, which is a hallmark of progressive education.  Often in higher education, learning goals are defined by professors rather than by students. How can students become more involved in helping to structure their own learning and refine the skills to collaboratively shape their own communities and societies?

Come support the work of three UW Farmers who are leading classes on campus. In this symposium, Amalia Tonsor, Lily Nash, and Michelle Venetucci Harvey will talk about their classes and what student-directed learning looks like.

See here for more information.

Art+Agriculture with Novella Carpenter and okanomodé

When: April 28, 7-10 pm

Alleycat Acres is partnering with the local non-profit Essential Arts to throw Art + Agriculture #2: An evening with Novella Carpenter + guests.

Novella used to live here in Seattle and now lives in Oakland. Recently, she was slapped with a $5K fine for urban farming. She'll be talking about her experiences (and this newly slapped fine) and we'll also have a panel talk about what urban ag is and how we can all move forward, with other invited guests: Rev. Robert Jeffrey (Clean Greens), Erick Haakenson (Jubilee Farm), Rosy Smit (21 Acres), and Maria Elena Rodriguez (Community Alliance for Global Justice). Eddie Hill from Seattle Tilth will moderate.

It will be an awesome evening -- tickets at $7-20 and are available on Brown Paper Tickets.

Seattle Tilth is hiring an Environmental Educator

Seattle Tilth is hiring an educator to support the Garden Hotline. Hotline educators provide service by phone, email and walk in queries by residents Monday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Educators provide information on plant care and selection, insect, animal and plant pests, IPM alternatives to pesticide use, weed management, urban food growing, soil building, soil biology, composting of yard debris and food scraps, use of compost and mulch, grass-cycling, natural lawn care, outdoor water conservation and home storm water management to residents of the City of Seattle and King County at large. Educators also conduct community outreach in Seattle and throughout King County, which includes tabling at events, delivering educational workshops and presentations, giving garden tours, and other activities.

Thanks to Jeanine Carlson for the tip! This weekend workshop in Seattle is great and easily accessible for all of us. It's called Ecology of Leadership and geared more towards finding yourself as a leader; it is as much internal discovery as natural world application. Beautiful!
